API or subscription: which one actually costs less
Flat plans die from rate limits; APIs die from bills. The crossover point is narrower than either side claims.
People compare the wrong numbers. A $200 plan and a pay-per-token API are not the same product with different pricing — they fail in different ways, and the cheaper one depends on how predictable your week is.
Where the subscription wins
- Interactive work. Chat, reading, iterating in an editor. You pay a flat fee and stop thinking about cost per token, which changes how you use the tool — you ask more, you explore more.
- Bursty days. One heavy afternoon costs the same as one light morning.
- Claude Code. An agent that reads twenty files per run is where flat pricing is worth the most, because the token count is invisible to you.
Where the API wins
- Automation with known volume. A script that processes 500 documents a night has a predictable bill and no rate-limit wall.
- Product features. If you are building something for users, you need per-request billing, not a personal seat.
- Occasional deep work. If you use the product twice a week, a plan is a subscription you forget; the API bills what you actually use.
The crossover, roughly
A rough way to think about it: a Pro-tier plan is worth it once your monthly API spend would exceed the plan price at the same volume. In practice that happens around the point where you stop counting requests — for most developers, somewhere in the first or second week of daily use.
Below that, the API is cheaper and you keep the flexibility. Above it, the plan is cheaper and you accept the ceiling.
The thing nobody mentions
The two are not mutually exclusive, and the expensive mistake is buying the top plan and then barely using it. If your usage is spiky and unpredictable, the honest setup is a mid tier plus a small API key for the spikes.
If you are sizing a plan, the price list has all tiers; if you are deciding between tiers, start with the 5x vs 20x comparison.

The difference is not quality — it is how many times you can hit the wall before lunch. A practical way to size your plan.
