Does restarting a Claude Code session cost more
Usually no: continuing a long session is the cheaper side of this trade, because a fresh session has to rebuild the context it lost.
Mostly the opposite of what people assume. Continuing a long session is usually cheaper than restarting it, because a new session starts with nothing and has to rebuild the picture: reading the files again, re-establishing what was already decided, re-running exploration you did an hour ago. That rebuild is billed like any other work. The thread you want to escape is expensive to add to, but the empty thread you would replace it with is expensive to fill.
Where the cost in a long thread actually comes from
Each new message carries the accumulated context with it. So the marginal message in a long session costs more than the marginal message in a short one, and the growth is not dramatic at first and then becomes obvious. Long sessions also get slower, and the answers drift toward re-explaining decisions the session already made. That is a real quality signal, and it is not the same thing as a cost signal.
When continuing is cheaper
- Most of the thread is still relevant to the next question.
- The work is a chain: an investigation whose intermediate results the next step depends on.
- The session already read files that are expensive to re-read.
- You are near the end of the task and a restart would spend the remaining allowance on setup.
When restarting is cheaper
- The thread is half abandoned: a direction you have already ruled out is still being carried by every message.
- You are moving to a different part of the codebase that barely overlaps with the current context.
- The session is long enough that it keeps re-deriving things it should already know.
The restart that is actually cheap is a deliberate one. Write two or three lines of the state by hand: what is decided, what is ruled out, which files matter, what the next step is. Start the new session from that summary rather than from zero. The written summary is the difference between a restart that costs less and a restart that pays the rebuild price twice.
The limit you are trying to manage
Two clocks apply here: a rolling window of roughly five hours and a weekly ceiling above it. Session shape is one of the few levers that affects both, which is why a burst of restarts is the worst response to a limit message: it spends allowance on context rebuilding during a window that is already closing. Claude Code rate limits covers how those windows show up in the agent specifically.
What does not help
Nothing local resets a vendor-side counter. Clearing the conversation history, reinstalling, starting from a different terminal or a fresh browser session all leave the same limit in place. If the plan is simply too small for the work, the honest lever is headroom: Claude Pro is 105 CNY, about 14 euro, a month, Max 5x is 523 CNY and Max 20x is 1047 CNY. Current stock is on the Max 5x page, and the price list carries every tier.
Payment here is crypto only. The plan is applied to the account you sign in to, using the Organization ID from Settings, then Account. Never a password, never a 2FA code.
Common questions
So I should never start a new session
No. Start one when the old thread's context is mostly irrelevant, and start it from a written summary instead of from a blank prompt.
Does a long session cost more per message
Generally yes, because the accumulated context travels with each new message. That is why scoping a thread matters more than its length alone.
Is there a maximum session length
That is the vendor's setting and we do not control it. What we can say is that a limit message is not an invitation to restart repeatedly during the same window.
Do I need Max for long coding sessions
Not necessarily. If restarts are your main cost, better session hygiene may be enough. If the limit interrupts normal work most days, headroom is the cheaper fix.
Will you refund the difference if I upgrade mid-month
An order here refunds on the standard formula, order amount times unused days divided by total days. An upgrade is a new order; read the terms on the refund page before deciding.
