Claude usage limit reached: what to do in the next five minutes
A limit is a clock, not a verdict. No local trick resets it. The moves that preserve what is left, and the ones that only burn it.
Direct answer: a usage limit is a clock, not a verdict. Nothing you do on your machine makes it reset sooner. Clearing cache, signing out, using a different browser, starting the app from a terminal: none of it touches a counter that lives on the vendor's side. What you can control in the next five minutes is what work you do while the window is closing, and how much of the remaining allowance you spend finding that out.
Worth doing now
- Read the reset time the notice shows and treat it as a fact. Then decide whether the task in front of you fits inside the remaining allowance or after the reset.
- Switch to the lighter model for anything that does not need the heavy one. Rewriting a docstring at the top model is the most common wasted unit.
- Stop adding to a long thread. Every new message in a long conversation carries the accumulated context with it, so the same question costs more at message forty than it did at message four.
- Shrink what the session can see. Fewer files, shorter prompts, no re-pasting the whole repository to answer one narrow question.
- Batch related edits into one request instead of one request per change.
Useless, and sometimes actively bad
Refreshing to see if the message changed. Starting a second conversation to test whether the limit is per chat: the limit is not per chat, and the test consumes the thing you are trying to save. Re-asking the same question in different words. And the one that costs the most: opening a second account. That converts a billing inconvenience into an account problem, which is a different and worse category. The mechanics are in why AI accounts get restricted.
Know which limit you hit
There are two windows and they behave differently. The short one rolls over roughly every five hours and is the one heavy bursts exhaust. The other is a weekly ceiling, and it does not reset because you waited a few hours. If a limit message clears and then returns the same day, you are almost certainly looking at the weekly one, and pacing is the only lever. Claude Code rate limits covers the agent-specific version of the same two windows.
When the fix is headroom rather than habit
If you are timing out on ordinary work rather than on a week of unusual work, the plan is too small, not you too careless. Claude Pro is 105 CNY, about 14 euro, for one month. Claude Max 5x is 523 CNY, roughly 70 euro, and Max 20x is 1047 CNY, roughly 140 euro. The multiplier names describe vendor-side headroom, and we do not control how it is computed; what we can say is that the higher tiers exist for people whose limit messages have become a scheduling problem. Live stock and the full comparison are on the Max 5x page and the price list.
If you buy the higher tier here, payment is crypto only, one invoice watches one network and one exact amount, and the plan is applied to your own account using the Organization ID from Settings, then Account. We never ask for a password or a 2FA code.
One caution: an upgrade buys allowance, not immunity. Nothing about a plan changes the vendor's terms, and this shop cannot insure an account against a restriction.
Common questions
Does signing out and back in reset the limit
No. The counter is on the vendor's side. Sign-out changes nothing and costs a message to find that out.
How long do I actually wait
The notice itself carries the reset time, and the weekly ceiling does not follow the short window. If the same message returns the same day you cleared it, read it as the weekly limit.
Is it worth upgrading just to stop seeing the message
Only if the limit is interrupting normal work rather than a week of abnormal work. Compare Max 5x at 523 CNY against Max 20x at 1047 before deciding how much headroom you need.
Can you raise my limit from your side
No. We apply a plan to your account. The allowance belongs to the vendor.
Should I use a second account until the window resets
No. That turns a billing annoyance into an account risk, and a restriction caused by breaking the terms is not something we can refund or insure.
